An important Advisory No. 657 has been issued by the Goods and Services Tax Network regarding a recent issue with interest calculations in Table 5.1 of Form GSTR-3B. Due to a technical error, some taxpayers might have had their interest for February 2026 calculated incorrectly. This mistake happened because the calculations did not take into account certain cash balances that they were supposed to benefit from.
GSTN for resolving the issue has rolled out a “Re-compute Interest” option on the GST portal. Taxpayers can utilise the same feature to recompute the correct interest amount, verify the same via the system-generated GSTR-3B PDF, and update the values accordingly before filing.
The same move has the objective to ensure accurate self-assessment, prevent excess payment of interest, and enhance overall GST compliance.
Advisory on Re-Computation of Interest under Table 5.1 of GSTR-3B
- With the streaming effort for taxpayers and assisting the taxpayers in performing a correct self-assessment, the GST portal auto-calculates interest on late filing of GSTR-3B as per the tax liability released and tax liability breakup provided in the “Tax Liability Breakup, As Applicable” table.
- This system-computed interest is auto-populated and collected in Table 5.1 of the subsequent period GSTR-3B. The facility is similar to the collection of late fees for GSTR-3B, which is calculated after filing of GSTR-3B and collected in the subsequent GSTR-3B period.
- The detailed breakup of interest calculation can be verified via the System Generated GSTR 3B PDF, which can be accessed through the following navigation path:
Login → Return Dashboard → Select Return Period → GSTR 3B → Prepare Online → System Generated GSTR 3B PDF.
- Because of technical errors for a few taxpayers’ interest for the Feb 2026 appearing in Table 5.1 of the March 2026, may have been computed wrongly without providing the benefit of the minimum cash balance available in the Electronic Cash Ledger under the proviso to Rule 88B(1) of the CGST Rules, 2017. If any taxpayer observes any discrepancy in the system-calculated interest, an option to recompute interest is available on the GST Portal.
- The taxpayer can tap on the “RE-COMPUTE INTEREST” button given under Table 5.1 of GSTR 3B. When this option is tapped, the system recalculates the interest as per the latest and updated parameters available in the system, and the revised interest amount will thereafter be shown in the updated system-generated GSTR-3B PDF.

- Taxpayers should refer to the updated GSTR-3B system-generated PDF for the revised interest values and thereafter update the interest in Table 5.1 via manually editing the already autopopulated values in Table 5.1. The revised interest will be seen on hover of the respective field in Table 5.1 of GSTR-3B. It is to be noted that the manually edited interest value shall not be less than the recomputed interest prompted in the system-generated GSTR-3B PDF.
